Welcoming the new Peruvian Ambassador to Ireland

Welcoming the new Peruvian Ambassador to Ireland

Her Excellency, Mrs. Ana María Sánchez arrived in Ireland on April 1st as the new Peruvian Ambassador to Ireland. Representing the Peruvian Government in Ireland, her work is focused on the promotion and strengthening of bilateral relationships in political, economic, educational and cultural fields while identifying unique opportunities in trade, investment and tourism between the two countries. Peru is also part of the Pacific Alliance, a Latin American trade block ensuring complete freedom in the movement of goods, services, capital and people. An integrated area, it includes the countries of Mexico, Columbia and Chile as well as Peru itself. All of these countries have embassies in Ireland together with Argentina, Brazil and Cuba, form a strong South/Latin American presence in the country.

Chacas Hospital Project

Chacas is a town of 2,000 people high up in the Peruvian Andes, north of Lima, the latter half of the journey crosses the Cordillera Blanca (white range of mountains) where altitude challenges the healthiest of people and isolates the community. Hospital Mama Ashu is the only hospital in the town/region and people walk tens of miles in some cases to be treated at the hospital. It is currently run entirely by volunteers and was founded in 1994 by an Italian movement (Operación Matto Grosso - OMG). The hospital services over 8,000 people and has one volunteer doctor living permanently in Chacas.

The link in Ireland for the Chacas Hospital Project is Dr. Jackelina Pando Kelly, a Clincial Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at UCC. Born in Lima to an Irish mother and Peruvian doctor father, Dr. Jackelina has supported the project since her medical student days in Peru. Each year she brings a group of medical students from UCC to Chacas as summer volunteers while she replaces the only resident volunteer doctor at the hospital. She and Cathal Cregg published a book ‘Hello in There’ to raise funds for the Chacas Hospital Project.

RGT Group & Cregg Stone

The hosts for the welcome evening are Cregg Stone & RGT Group. Cathal Cregg is the dynamic founder of Cregg Stone, the largest natural stone suppliers and fixers in both the commercial and residential markets in Ireland.
