Steven Sharpe//Katie O'Connor//To Gaze Upon Us - GRCC Fundraiser

Thu, 12 Jul 2018 - Thu, 12 Jul 2018
20:00 - 23:00

On July 12th, The Black Gate Cultural Centre will host a night of music with Steven Sharpe and Katie O'Connor in aid of The Galway Rape Crisis Centre (GRCC).
It's great that, together, we can make a big difference to the lives of others while enjoying delicious wine and great live music for €10! Incredible! How great is Galway?!
--------- OUR CHARITY --------
GRCC is dedicated to providing a professional, caring and confidential counselling and support service for those in our community affected by sexual abuse and sexual violence. We also work towards ending cultural and societal tolerance of sexual violence through advocacy, awareness raising and education programmes. GRCC’s vision is of a just and equal society where everyone has the right to live free from sexual violence and abuse.
--------- OUR VENUE --------
The Black Gate is a place of the arts. It has been born with creativity at its heart, and, with it, we will further assert the creative soul of this city. With music, literature, art, film, dance, and learning, we will create a home for the artist and a haven for art lovers. This will be a place to enjoy. Both for the events that happen here and for the atmosphere. Whether listening to a concert, watching a film, listening to a speaker, enjoying reading a book in the library with a coffee or a glass of wine, or having a good night with old friends, we will welcome you, we will look after you, and we will entertain you.
''This is a great place to come for a nice relaxed atmosphere and some wonderful wine. They always have a great selection, and happy to help you find your partner for the night. Simple tapas and food is served in the evenings. The live music is fabulous. ''
''One of the best places I have ever been! Great atmosphere, original and lovely furniture, great music, friendly staff, the right place to chill out and enjoy a nice drink with good friends.''
--------- OUR MUSIC --------
STEVEN SHARPE is undoubtedly one of Ireland's best-kept secrets but has made a name for himself in the Galway’s thriving music scene, performing his own brand of out'n'proud music with a live show that must be seen to be believed. His veracious, witty, and soulful musical presence blends music, humour and storytelling and draws influences from Prince to Kate Bush to Nina Simone. In 2015 he started performing with ‘The Broke Straight Boys’ a backing band made up of Galway’s most competent and versatile musicians and since has played sold-out shows and festivals all over Ireland.
‘Sound it Out’ was recently released on the 27th of April, is the latest hook-filled, lyrically explicit single from Galway-based male- diva sensation Steven Sharpe and his unwitting backing band ‘The Broke Straight Boys’.
''The best Irish entertainer I’ve seen to date''
"...see him play live. It's an experience not to be missed"
KATIE O'CONNOR has shared her music on stages and streets throughout Europe, since her beginning in Galway 2011. In the midst of attaining a midwifery degree, Katie found herself being drawn to creating and sharing music on the street. After qualifying as a midwife, she took early retirement, shaved her head and started afresh in Berlin with just her guitar, her voice and a desire to be true to herself. Although based mainly in Ireland for the time being, Katie spends many weeks of the year on the road bringing her music and message to those who wish to listen. Songs and stories entwined, she delivers a gripping performance each and every time backed up by powerful lyrics and an unrivalled raspy voice. Recently releasing her fourth album, Fuel For Dreaming in May, has been met with a very positive response from her listeners.
''My mother and I listened to her in Nuremberg, and I had constant shivers!''
''Her voice is a dream come true, so unbelievably amazing! ''
TO GAZE UPON US is the love child of Steven and Katie because that's as physical as it's getting. They made their debut in April of 2015 in the Róisín Dubh in the run up to the Marriage Equality vote, and now they are back! Sharpe takes O’Connor to more upbeat areas, as she leads him to more sentimental and heartfelt places. Blending their individual styles, Katie’s melodic vocals beautifully complement Steven’s flamboyant sass to create a lush sound. The realiness is right here.
''Always performing from the heart, a joy to listen over and over again.''
