Handel: Silete Venti (HWV 242) Joanne Lunn (soprano)- “a voice like spun gold, and a face full of conviction” (The Financial Times) Irish Baroque Orchestra are delighted to welcome star soprano Joanne Lunn for Delirio this September! The programme features sublime music by Handel for solo soprano and orchestra, centered around Il Delirio Amoroso/The Delirium of Love. This cantata was written during Handel’s spell in Italy in his early career and was first performed in 1707. It is a sublime work with a virtuosic soprano line, complimented by beautiful solo writing for oboe, recorder and cello. Parts of the work may be familiar to you as they were reused by Handel in later works such as Acis and Galatea and Jephta. Il Deliriio is beautifully contrasted by the lavish Silete Venti, which is one of Handel’s most sublime motets. It is a work in five contrasting movements, culminating in a virtuosic Alleluia- which epitomises Handelian splendour in its complex melismatic writing. A true gem!
