Exercise Oncology Workshop: Training cancer patients and survivors.

Sat, 15 Dec 2018
09:00 - 23:59

The old saying that individuals with cancer should rest as much as possible has long been dispelled. In fact, the more active a patient/survivor can be, the better their prognosis will likely be.  Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Fortunately, as a result of  improved screening and cancer treatments, the survival rates of a lot of cancers have improved dramatically in recent years. This also means that there are more survivors than ever dealing with some of the devastating side effects of treatment, some of which can last months or years after treatment finishes.  Exercise can be an extremely valuable tool to combat the side effects of treatment, improve survivorship, and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Dr. Ciaran Fairman will bring a wealth of clinical and research experience  to deliver this workshop for personal trainers and health professionals interested in working with cancer patients and survivors.  Learning Modules that will be covered:  Module 1 - Cancer Basics/History of Exercise OncologyModule 2 - Impact of cancer treatments on physical and mental healthModule 3 - Patient/Survivor AssessmentsModule 4 - Exercise Prescription for Cancer Patients and SurvivorsModule 5 - Site-specific modifications of exerciseModule 6 - Cancer specific barriers to exercise and fostering behaviour change.
