Understanding Probiotic Research: A Workshop for Student Dietitians

This workshop has been designed for student dietitians, specifically the MSc students at UCD, to support and enhance understanding of the gut microbiota and probiotics, and to provide insights into the latest evidence and potential use of probiotics. A practical session on interpreting probiotic research will also encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills.

DRAFT PROGRAMME

10am: Arrival, Registration & Refreshments

10:30am: Introductions & Overview of the Yakult workshop

11am: An introduction to the gut microbiota and factors affecting it (age, antibiotic, stress)

11:30am: An introduction to probiotics and their mechanism of action

12pm: Refreshment Break

12:20pm: Understanding and interpreting probiotic research 

12:50pm: Lunch & Networking

1:45pm: Workshop – read and critique a paper in small groups

2:15pm: Group presentations (5 mins per group) and discussions

2:45pm: Refreshment Break

3:05pm:  Summary of the evidence for probiotic use (in gastrointestinal health, infectious disease and immunity)

3:25pm: Practical support and safety considerations when choosing a probiotic

3:55pm: Reflection on Workshop Learnings

4pm: Thank you and Close
