`In the Middle of his Journey”: Station Island and Seamus Heaney’s life.
Seamus Heaney’s Station Island, published in 1984, is a landmark volume. The title poem is an exploration of autobiography, literary influence and Irish history, undertaken at a key moment in his life. In this lecture Roy Foster considers the development of the poem and its companion-pieces, and explores the ways in which it is anticipatory of Heaney’s later life, as well as retrospectively analytical about the influences that made him such a remarkable poet.
