Novelising King Lear: In Conversation With Anne Enright and Preti Taneja

In her first appearance since being named Professor of Fiction at the School of English, Drama and Film, UCD, the Booker-prize winning novelist Anne Enright will be joined by exciting debut-author Preti Taneja to discuss what it means to take a classic of the English dramatic canon and make it your own.

King Lear is entrenched in the global cultural consciousness as a story of patriarchal power in decline, but Enright’s shattering, “virtuosic” novel The Green Road reimagines the narrative around a monstrous matriarch in rural Ireland from the cold Catholicism of the 1980s to the spiritual wasteland of the boom years. Taneja’s “extraordinary” We That Are Young, winner of the Desmond Elliott Prize, on the other hand transports the familiar story of dynastic self-destruction to the corrupt world of present-day commercial Delhi. Taneja, a former human rights reporter, brings a searing honesty to her portrait of a family torn apart by greed and misogyny.

This event will bring together two award-winning writers, each acclaimed for their unflinching originality and integrity of vision, to consider the subversive power of reinventing a classic for a new age.

This is a free event but booking is essential.
